Why study in Georgia?
Georgia is a small country in the Caucasus. Most Indian students go there for the six-year Medical Doctor (MD) programme, which Georgian authorities describe as equal to an MBBS. Several universities in Tbilisi and Batumi teach the MD in English. A few also offer English-taught bachelor's and master's degrees in business, computer science and engineering.
If you plan to practise in India, the National Medical Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021 apply to you. The course must last at least 54 months and be taught in English. You need a 12-month internship at the same foreign university, on top of the course. You must also be registered to practise medicine in Georgia on the same terms as a Georgian citizen. NMC does not publish a list of approved foreign universities. Check every programme against these rules yourself before you pay.
Be careful with Georgia's MD structure. According to answers from Georgian authorities published by the Embassy of India in Yerevan, the internship (clinical clerkship) sits inside the sixth year of the course. Independent practice in Georgia needs a national exam and a residency. Ask each university in writing how its programme meets each FMGL condition.
- Several universities teach the six-year MD fully in English
- Published English-medium MD fees range from about US$5,000 to US$8,000 a year
- Universities such as Tbilisi State University and BAU International University ask Indian applicants for NEET
- Georgian authorities say MD programmes are accredited by NCEQE, which is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education
- Some universities also teach business, computer science and engineering degrees in English
- Two intakes a year at some universities, for example Ilia State University (autumn and spring)
